I struggled a bit with how to structure these lists of extra articles and what to call them - it makes more sense hierarchy-wise to have the link/title at the top, since the articles undernearth are a sublist,

but in terms of the way you read it; you would read the small list of article titles and then want to go to the page to see all of them. I tried having a see all link at the bottom, or even none at all (you click the title of the section or submenu to get to the subcategory page) but they both look odd.

So I went back to having it on top but tried to change the words - having "All ___ News" works quite well, but for the longer subcategory pages that means it would go onto two lines, which would throw the alignment off. (Also, for the News subcategories it would just be 'All New Releases" or "All Updates")
Then  I Tried having just "All ____"  for everything but that sounds odd when it's "All Bisexual" etc.

also tried "See All", and then "More Stories" which I think works best - it's saying that the five headlies below are 'more stories' and also if you click on it it will take you to even more.

subcategory page

-in this, there's no way to see what subcategory page you're on.

I tried adding a title, which works well but also looks a little odd.

then I tried fading the text on all the other ones, which, I think works better in terms of the existing menu - I also made the images bigger so they're not so squashes together and the text doesn't cover the text on most of the book covers. I decided that this image ratio looks better on all the pages (though on mobile it still changes)

the only thing with this, is that i need somewhere to put the bookmark for bookmarking a subcategory - it would work well next to the white title space in the previous image.
but, i tried it in the menu item? which i think works pretty well. in the smaller responsive layout it somewhat looks like it might be attached to the 'upcoming releases' item but i think because it's only showing the bookmark of the page you're on, it's probably fine.

submenu

I initially did the submenu like this

mobile:

but thought it might be too much for this one? (actually i had them all in one column on mobile first)

so I tried putting it in another dropdown; but decided that is too many; it will proabably look better like it does above.

excepr that the top menu just saying categories and being pink is vague, and not as obvious about what page you're on, I made it do this on each page:

and just to make the hierarchy slightly different, and so news doesn't look so repeated:

more wireframes + invision

Invision links: Web | Mobile

I tried to sort all of the 'get involved' stuff which was quite scattered into one page

and made a new releases page

Also thought about putting the text over the images, like in the carosel? this would save space and look neater - especially when some titles are one line of text and some are three, if they're all on the images it doesn't matter

--------------------
trying some mobile layouts:

a simpler version - not sure if the text is too big here though?

updated wireframes

added only one top story so that subcategories are more visible above fold

made related stories more specific - as in, related to a particular aspect

made an identities category page - unlike the news one, there's only one top story and one other headline under each thing - because there are 20 subcategories rather than 5.

I cut down some of the subcategories a little, so that there are fewer and also grouped some (graphic novel/comics) that are very similar. this also means they're all multiples of five (news is four, but can have a popular column to fill the gap)

another version of the long article.

User Personae

1 Haiyan
task: browsing, find an article about the newtown festival
[home, menu, national page, dominion post page, article]
  • Home, clicked on menu
  • Went to national news, thinking  there might be a wellington subsection, couldn't find it
  • Back to menu, further down to wellington section,
  • which takes you to dominion post home page
  • scrolls down, sees  'newtown fes..' clicks on that
  • at the article!
some things i noticed when browsing the mobile site to make the wireframes:
  • when scrolling down, most things are stacked but some are to the side and you can only see them if you scroll sideways? which you will miss unless you happen to scroll sideways at the right point
2 Hemi
Multitasker, looking for current events quickly and easily. Just browsing headlines, not going into articles.
[in book]
  • you can see most of the recent news by scrolling down the home page, though a lot of it's not necesarily 'current events'
  • so to find the stuff he's interested in he probably will have to pay more attention to what he's reading which might take longer
  • not sure how to fix this, maybe having a 'most popular' section like there is on the website?

3 Mike
refreshes dominion post home page or categories a lot, likes serious news
Task: browse dominion post, find an article about

  • if he refreshes the page a lot, he probably doesn't scroll down much, at first at least. probably wouldn't on the home page since it's so long

4 Sarah
Task: Comment on an article about the Capital E art's festival that you were linked to from twitter, and find out when it is

  • this is a pretty easy one, and the participant knew the comments were at the bottom, though had to look quite a bit to find the date in the text

5 Andrea
Task: Find the most recent article relating to the Silver Ferns

  • It's easy to get to the sports section and the a specific sport if you know what you're looking for (in my example, an article about a silver fern)
  • but if you just want to browse, it's a lot of scrolling. if the articles on the second page were even just in two columns, it'd be a lot easier to have a look at all the main stories quickly.
  • the sports section on the home page is also at the very bottom
6 Barry
Gets linked to articles via email, prints them to read, also browses dominion post for politics/national news

  • printing an article is easy (though there could be an actual print button on stuff rather than just in the browser) but it doesn't tend to print well-formatted - especially for someone with bad eyesight?
  • There's no specific politics category, which means looking for relevant articles might be hard - but if you're planning on browsing through them it might be okay.
  • again, the bottom half of the page is just links one after another which is a lot of scrolling
